How to Change a Washer Coupler

The Washer Coupler in your washing machine is something that tends to wear off very easily. Not everyone can afford to get it changed or repaired professionally. Today, I will be teaching you how to replace the coupler of your washing machine in few easy steps. Why pay 75 bucks to the repairman when you can now do it yourself. Just read below to learn how.

Things Required

Screw driver
Putty knife
Hammer

Steps

Empty your washing machine first. Make sure there are no clothes in it. Also make sure the power to the machine has been switched off. Better unplug it for safety.

Now, depending on the model and make of your washing machine, you will first either unscrew the back of the unit or remove the control panel of your machine.

Release the console by first rotating it forward and then upward.

Once the console has been separated from the machine, you will have to remove the switch plug. This plug is mostly white in color.

Next open the two big clips inside and slightly lift the container. You will find that the container can now be easily separated from the base.

Set the container aside. Remove the pump off the motor shaft by releasing the two clips and keep it aside as well.

Now you will have to remove the motor. The motor is usually secured by the help of two big clips. These clips are fixed by shipping screws. Unscrew them; remove the clips, tilt and lift the motor to take it off.

You will now find the coupler of your washing machine. A retired coupler will have a worn out rubber and some broken plastic pegs as well.

Pry off the coupler. Remove it from the motor shaft and discard it.

Fix the new couple with the help of a hammer. Place the coupler on top of the motor shaft and gear and tap it slightly.

Now, start putting the washing machine back together. Put on the motor and push it back to place.

Once fixed grease it slightly and place the pump back into its place. Re-clip it and make sure all the screwing is tight.

Mount the cabinet onto the base and make sure it is well aligned. The cabinet will be fixed immediately if it is in alignment with the screws.

Snap the clips back and check it once more so that there is no visible gap between the panel and the container.

Install the plug switch once again. Plug your washing machine and start washing clothes.

TIPS

If you find any water marks around the pump of the washing machine, this may be an indication that your pump has been leaking. Better replace it soon.
After you have fixed the new coupler, I would advise you to oil the brakes before closing the washing machine. This step may take only a couple of minutes but will save you lots of overhead in the future.

Warnings:

Do wear a pair of rubber gloves before you start to open your machine. It better to be safe than sorry.
Do not try to reuse the coupler once you have removed it. It will not function again and may damage your device as well.
